Élargissant son rôle d’accompagnement dans la basse continue, Bach est le premier à demander au clavecin, dont il jouait avec une souveraine maîtrise, une participation entière au genre nouveau de la sonate. Composées à Coethen autour de 1720 et conçues comme un ensemble organisé, ses six Sonates pour violon et clavecin établissent la parfaite égalité entre les deux instruments, dans une profonde connaissance de leurs caractéristiques propres. Alors que le violon déploie autant de lyrisme que de panache, le clavecin, grâce à un contrepoint aussi libre que savant, entretient avec lui un captivant dialogue. Ces Sonates comptent parmi les plus belles pages de la musique de chambre de Bach, et on y trouve des morceaux parmi les plus émouvants de sa production.

Expanding his role as an accompaniment in the basso continuo, Bach was the first to ask the harpsichord, which he played with sovereign mastery, to fully participate in the new genre of the sonata. Composed in Coethen around 1720 and conceived as an organized ensemble, his six Sonatas for violin and harpsichord establish perfect equality between the two instruments, in a deep knowledge of their own characteristics. While the violin deploys as much lyricism as panache, the harpsichord, thanks to a counterpoint as free as skilful, maintains a captivating dialogue with it. These Sonatas are among the most beautiful pieces of Bach's chamber music, and there are some of the most moving pieces of his output.
