After Boris Godunov, Mussorgsky continues to explore and question the history of Russia. For this opera, he was inspired by the Moscow Revolt of 1682, the year in which Peter the Great was consecrated tsar. While he wanted to reform Russia, he encountered resistance from the nobility and the church, the first led by Prince Ivan Khovanski, the second by the Old Believers and their leader Dosifei. To this tragic story, Mussorgsky gave the most fascinating music possible, dark and bewitching, seeming to come from the depths of time. Andrei Serban's staging immerses us in 17th century feudal Russia with its flamboyant costumes and monumental decorations.https://www.operadeparis.fr/saison-21...,
