"The Tale of Igor's Campaign" (1185-1187) tells about the campaign of Prince Igor Svyatoslavich of Novgorod-Seversky against the Polovtsians. He wanted to achieve victory without the help of other princes and was defeated. Condemning internecine strife, the unknown creator of the Lay passionately urged the Russian princes to unite.

In April 1869, Vladimir Stasov offered Alexander Borodin this monument of ancient Russian literature as an opera plot. For 18 years, friends have been creating the text and music of the opera. After the death of Borodin A.K. Glazunov restored the overture from memory and, based on the author's sketches, completed the missing episodes of the opera, and N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov instrumented most of it. The premiere was a great success on October 23 (November 4), 1890 in St. Petersburg, on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre.
