On the 3rd of Dec 2021 we are celebrating the 132nd anniversary of the birth of composer Cyrillus Kreek. Music video of "I Went on a Dusky Day" by Cyrillus Kreek (1889-1962) was filmed in summer 2021, when the EPCC celebrated its 40th anniversary and Tõnu Kaljuste was named the Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the EPCC again after about 20 years since he last held this position. To celebrate this moment of reuniting, Tõnu Kaljuste invited his musicians from the EPCC and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra to his residence on Naissaar Island in June 2021. 

Tõnu Kaljuste has proven himself an expert and a committed advocate of the music of many Estonian composers. The music of Cyrillus Kreek has been in the heart and repertoire of EPCC and Tõnu Kaljuste for years. Together they have been introducing the musical output of Kreek to the world in concerts and on records.

Het was een historisch, bevrijdend moment, toen het Ests Filharmonisch Kamerkoor en dirigent Tõnu Kaljuste na twee jaar coronalockdowns het Muziekgebouw vulden met hun kristalheldere, haast bovenaardse klankschoonheid tijdens het Pärt Festival. Zelden klonk Pärts muziek zo indrukwekkend en was zijn muziek zo’n nodig voedsel voor hart en ziel. Een ware traktatie uit de rijke Baltische koorwereld.

Nu komt het Ests Filharmonisch Kamerkoor met twee grote Estse voorgangers van Pärt: Cyrillus Kreek en Veljo Tormis. Taferelen uit de natuur staan op het programma, het leven op het platteland, het boerenbestaan, maar ook bezinning op het leven en hogere machten, zoals in liederen voor religieuze feesten en de seizoenen. Deze twee componisten bewijzen waarom de Estse koortraditie zo rijk is.

It was a historic, liberating moment when, after two years of coronavirus lockdowns, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and conductor Tõnu Kaljuste filled the Muziekgebouw with their crystal-clear, almost otherworldly tonal beauty at the Pärt Festival. Rarely has Pärt’s music sounded so impressive and has it been such necessary nourishment for the heart and soul. A real treat from the rich Baltic choral world.

This time, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir performs two of Pärt’s great Estonian predecessors: Cyrillus Kreek and Veljo Tormis. Scenes from nature are on the programme, rural life, peasant life, but also contemplation and higher powers, as is common in songs for religious festivals and the seasons. These two composers are proof of the richness of the Estonian choral tradition.
