With the beginning of the 2016/2017 season, the SND Opera is returning to the production of Suchoňová Krútňava, which is one of the cornerstones of Slovak opera. This is happening in the context of SK PRES 2016, ie as our cultural contribution to the presidency of the Slovak Republic in the European Union. The performance then remains in the ensemble's playing schedule even during the autumn period.  

The author composed Krutňava in the years 1941-49. It was performed with great success by all opera stages in Czechoslovakia, as well as by many theaters abroad (including Budapest, Moscow, Berlin, Leipzig, Munich and Antwerp). The production by director Juraj Jakubisek is the fifth staging of the work in the SND. The story of Krútňava takes place after the First World War in a small mountain village. It is the story of a young man whose jealousy leads to murder. Through crime, he opens the way to marriage to a beloved girl, but he is haunted by remorse, which eventually drives him to confess to his act and go to justice. Krutňavait is a "national opera" with folk dances, customs and associations to folk traditions, but it is also a captivating, psychologically sophisticated drama. It is a look into the lives of people living in the bosom of nature and bound with faith in God, who draw precisely from this faith, inherited from their ancestors, their strength, strength to rise and carry their difficult fate on.
