Writing »thick, strong, full choruses« was Mendelssohn Bartholdy's primary goal when he set about setting the story of the prophet Elijah from the Old Testament to music in 1837. The result is one of the most important, opulent and gripping choral works of all time. The original offers numerous dramatic scenes - from the cruel curse of Elijah to the unbelieving people of God to the appearance of the Lord and the ascension of the prophet on a fiery chariot.
