The premiere took place on 1 February 1896 at the Teatro Royal Turin. Young Arturo Toscanini was at the console that evening. Professional success was not obvious: critics scolded the opera for its "stupid" and defiantly "unoperative" plot. However, an ordinary viewer fell in love with her: all the premiere performances gave full fees.

After the Turin start, La Bohème conquered city after city: Buenos Aires - Rome - Moscow - London - Berlin - New York. Opera made a real sensation in France, where it was first shown in June 1898 at the Paris Opéra Comique. Claude Debussy himself, a master of the finest sound painting, admitted that “he does not know anyone who could describe the Paris of that time in such a way as Puccini did in La Boheme.

“In the foggy sky, smoke creeps from thousands of fireplaces in Paris ...” This is how one of the main characters of the opera, the poet Rudolph, creates a charming and completely impressionistic image of the city, in the spirit of the paintings of Sisley and Pissarro.
