Puccini's opera tells the love story of Mimì and Rodolfo against the backdrop of the milieu of Parisian artists, students, seamstresses and prostitutes. For the poet Rodolfo and his artist friends, life is just a game to escape from the bourgeoisie. But when his newfound love Mimì is ill and dying, life takes on a different form and suddenly becomes very real.

For this new production, the Vienna Volksoper is showing Harry Kupfer's already legendary production in Italian. In the case of Kupfer (1935 – 2019), one of the most important opera directors in post-war history, there was often talk of faithfulness to the work. Lotte de Beer paraphrases this term as follows: "Always go back to the source, to the original meaning of a score in the context of its time and only then look for an implementation that speaks to us in our present time." Faithfulness is not only important in the creation of a new production, but the term is beginning to be applied to historical productions by top directors themselves, such as Kupfer's.

For this new production, the Volksoper undertakes an "archaeological" investigation of the source, namely the production that Harry Kupfer staged in this house in 1984.

Puccinis Oper erzählt die Liebesgeschichte von Mimì und Rodolfo vor dem Hintergrund des Milieus der Pariser Künstler, Studenten, Näherinnen und Prostituierten. Für den Dichter Rodolfo und seine Künstlerfreunde ist das Leben nur ein Spiel, mit dem sie der Bourgeoisie entfliehen können. Aber als seine neu gefundene Liebe Mimì krank ist und im Sterben liegt, nimmt das Leben eine andere Form an und wird plötzlich sehr real.

Für diese Neueinstudierung zeigt die Volksoper Wien Harry Kupfers bereits legendäre Inszenierung in italienischer Sprache. Bei Kupfer (1935 – 2019), einem der wichtigsten Opernregisseure der Nachkriegsgeschichte, war häufig die Rede von Werktreue. Lotte de Beer umschreibt diesen Begriff folgendermaßen: "Immer zur Quelle zurückgehen, zur ursprünglichen Bedeutung einer Partitur im Kontext ihrer Zeit und erst dann eine Umsetzung suchen, die uns in unserer gegenwärtigen Zeit anspricht." Werktreue ist jedoch nicht nur in der Entstehung einer neuen Produktion von Bedeutung, sondern der Begriff findet langsam auch Anwendung auf historische Produktionen von Spitzenregisseuren selbst, wie jene von Kupfer.

Die Volksoper unternimmt für diese Neueinstudierung eine "archäologische" Untersuchung der Quelle, nämlich der Produktion, die Harry Kupfer 1984 an diesem Haus inszenierte.
