Près d’un siècle avant la composition de Semele de Georg Friedrich Händel (1744) ou de celle de sa jumelle Platée de Jean-Philippe Rameau (1749), La Calisto (1651) de Francesco Cavalli (1602-1676) s’impose comme l’une des premières mises en musique des amours extravagantes du Don Juan de l’Olympe, Jupiter. De passage sur terre, le père des dieux aperçoit la nymphe Calisto et en tombe à l’instant éperdument amoureux. La chaste suivante de Diane ne se laisse pas séduire par le galant effronté et repousse farouchement ses avances jusqu’à ce que ce dernier ne se déguise en Diane, et use ainsi de la supercherie pour approcher la jeune vierge… qui succombe immédiatement au charme de celui/celle en qui elle voit sa déesse adorée. Une fois de plus trompée, la jalouse Junon, épouse trahie du maître des dieux, se venge de la nymphe abusée en la transformant en ourse. Jupiter l’immortalise alors sous cette forme en la transformant à son tour en constellation.

Créé au Teatro San Apollinare de Venise le 28 novembre 1651, ce dramma per musica en un prologue et trois actes, sur un livret de Giovanni Faustini inspiré des Métamorphoses d’Ovide, est l’exemple même de ce qu’on appelle l’opéra vénitien : une basse continue surmontée de deux ou trois voix en termes d’écriture et un récitatif souple comme fondement du discours, lequel tend subtilement à l’arioso lors des sommets dramatiques de l’intrigue, qui elle repose sur le contraste des tons tragique et comique. Ce mélange des genres est associé ici à une extrême multiplicité de situations et de caractères. Tendresse, langueur, quiproquos, stupre, luxure, trahison, jalousie… de la chaste déesse à l’adolescent priapique, du mari travesti à l’épouse bafouée, chaque élément concourt à l’établissement d’une œuvre aux multiples facettes qui se pose aujourd’hui comme l’un des grands chefs-d’œuvre de l’histoire de l’opéra.

Nearly a century before the composition of Semele by Georg Friedrich Händel (1744) or that of its twin Platée by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1749), La Calisto (1651) by Francesco Cavalli (1602-1676) established itself as one of the first settings of the extravagant loves of Don Juan of Olympus, Jupiter. While passing through earth, the father of the gods sees the nymph Calisto and instantly falls madly in love with her. Diana's chaste follower does not allow herself to be seduced by the impudent gallant and fiercely rejects his advances until the latter disguises himself as Diane, and thus uses deception to approach the young virgin... who immediately succumbs to the charm of the one in whom she sees her adored goddess. Once again deceived, the jealous Juno, betrayed wife of the master of the gods, takes revenge on the abused nymph by transforming her into a bear. Jupiter then immortalizes it in this form by transforming it in turn into a constellation.

Created at the Teatro San Apollinare in Venice on November 28, 1651, this dramma per musica in a prologue and three acts, to a libretto by Giovanni Faustini inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses , is the very example of what we call opera Venetian: a basso continuo surmounted by two or three voices in terms of writing and a flexible recitative as the basis of the speech, which subtly tends towards arioso during the dramatic peaks of the plot, which is based on the contrast of tragic tones and comical. This mixture of genres is associated here with an extreme multiplicity of situations and characters. Tenderness, languor, misunderstandings, stupor, lust, betrayal, jealousy... from the chaste goddess to the priapic adolescent, from the transvestite husband to the scorned wife, each element contributes to the establishment of a multifaceted work which poses itself today as one of the great masterpieces of opera history.
