Two hundred years after the first performance on September 24, 1819 in Naples, the Zagreb HNK Opera is staging the opera Woman from the Lake by Gioacchino Rossini for the first time in Croatia, based on the libretto by Andrea Leone Tottola. That opera in three acts achieved an enviable success at the premiere, but fell into complete oblivion in the following hundred years. Our celebrated countertenor Max Emanuel Cencić staged Rossini's opera in Zagreb in co-production with the Opera de Lausanneand also takes on one of the leading roles – that of Malcolm. The role was originally written for a mezzo-soprano voice and this is the first time in history that the character has been played by a man. In the shadow of the fight of the rebels against the Scottish crown, three men are in love with Elena, the daughter of the king's main rival: the warrior Rodrigo, the brave supporter of the rebellion Malcolm and the king Giacomo V, disguised as Uberto. After a military and political triumph, the king offers the hand of his daughter Elena to the man she loves.
