Giacomo Puccinis 1910 uraufgeführte Oper wird gerne als Western mit Saloon und rauchenden Colts auf die Bühne gebracht, aber der Regisseur Barrie Kosky erzählt die Geschichte um die Barbesitzerin Minnie, die alleine unter Männern in einem Goldgräbercamp im amerikanischen Westen lebt, in seiner Zürcher Inszenierung als einen Thriller desolat vereinsamter Menschen, die «in der letzten Bar, im allerletzten Dorf, am gottverlassenenen Ende der Welt» verzweifelt um ihre Existenz und ihre Erlösung durch die Liebe kämpfen. Kosky hat sich dabei von den Stilmitteln des grossen amerikanischen Kinos inspirieren lassen, das Puccini mit dem filmischen Spannungsaufbau und seinem kompositorischen Realismus in seiner Partitur vorausahnte. Die heruntergekommene Welt einer verdreckten Bar, Minnies Hütte als enges ärmliches Zimmer und eine verschlammte Hausruine im Gangsterjagd-­Finale liefert ihm den äusseren Rahmen für spannungsvolle szenische Konkretion: Kosky bringt einen packenden Puccini-Krimi mit Liebes- und Actionelementen auf die Bühne. Wie schon in der Premiere bilden die charismatische Catherine Naglestad in der Rolle der Minnie und der starke Charakterdarsteller Scott Hendricks als raubeiniger Sheriff Rance dabei ein höchst theaterwirksames Gegenspieler-Paar. Brandon Jovanovich – als Sergej, Florestanoder Tambourmajor in Zürich bestens bekannt – gibt sein Debüt in der Tenor-Glanzrolle des Dick Johnson.

Giacomo Puccini's opera, which premiered in 1910, is often staged as a Western with a saloon and guns smoking, but the director Barrie Kosky tells the story about the bar owner Minnie, who lives alone among men in a gold digger camp in the American West, in his Zurich production as one Thriller about desolate, lonely people who desperately fight for their existence and their redemption through love «in the last bar, in the very last village, at the godforsaken end of the world». Kosky was inspired by the stylistic devices of great American cinema, which Puccini anticipated in his score with the cinematic build-up of tension and his compositional realism. The seedy world of a filthy bar Minnie's hut as a narrow, poor room and a muddy ruined house in the gangster hunt finale provide him with the external framework for exciting scenic concreteness: Kosky brings a gripping Puccini thriller with love and action elements to the stage. As in the premiere, the charismatic Catherine Naglestad in the role of Minnie and the strong character actor Scott Hendricks as the rough Sheriff Rance form a highly theatrical opponent pair.
