Giuseppe Verdi: LA FORZA DEL DESTINO, Oper Frankfurt

This exuberant, large-format opera, which is about burning passions, but also about the destructive power of racism, offers pure excitement. At the height of his ability, Verdi wrote what is perhaps his most experimental score for St. Petersburg. Freed from the constraints of the genre, he broke new ground and followed a montage-like dramaturgy. Scenes of the protagonists worked out with psychological precision are juxtaposed with broad genre scenes that are only loosely connected to the main plot. The Marchese of Calatrava refuses a connection between his daughter Leonora and Don Alvaro because of the color of his skin. When the father surprises the couple, a pistol shot goes off and kills the Marchese. For three acts, Leonora's brother Don Carlo chases the two lovers, who were separated on the run, across national borders, until there is a fatal reunion in the end. Tobias Kratzer translates the central theme of racism into an opulent sequence of images, making use of a wide variety of theatrical means.
