A shot accidentally fired sets the wheel of fortune in motion: Leonora and Alvaro are surprised by Leonora's father as they try to flee together. Seconds later he is hit by a misguided bullet and dying he curses his daughter. The lovers flee in panic, lose themselves and change identities, always pursued by Leonora's brother Carlo, who has sworn bloody revenge. With »The Power of Destiny« Verdi created a work in 1862 that, with its complex plot and rich musical spectrum, goes beyond his earlier, popular trilogy »Rigoletto«, »Il trovatore« and »La traviata«. The compositional diversity ranges from satirical sermons and dazzling choral tableaus to passionate duets and intimate arias.
