Grandson of a composer, son and brother of baritones, husband of Marianne Viardot, one of Pauline's daughters, Victor Alphonse Duvernoy (1842-1907) is one of the French musicians who have fallen into oblivion. His catalogue includes many works including two operas: Sardanapale created in concert version in Paris at the Concerts Lamoureux in 1882 (then performed in Liège in 1892) and Hellé , created in 1896 at no less than the Paris Opera.

In 1880, his symphonic poem The Tempest after Shakespeare was awarded the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris. "M. Duvernoy possesses, to a notable degree, a quality without which science and the work of form, however ingenious it may be, remain almost sterile. He has the melodic vein, if not always original and personal, at least never banal and never lacking in it," wrote Le Menestrel, the day after the first public performance, at the Châtelet in November 1880.

Once again commemorating the memory, the Cie de l'Oiseleur will exhume the score in a concert version, accompanied by the piano, and with the participation of Fiat Cantus for the choral parts.
