About the work

Despite the fact that La traviata today occupies a place among the most popular operas and is synonymous with fireworks of beautiful melodies, "going to the ear", the conservative audience of the Venetian Teatro Fenice whistled the baptismal performance in 1853. Success was brought to her only by staging a year later at the smaller San Benedetto Theater. La traviata is one of those operatic masterpieces that were created in one go, as the composer set it to music in a month and a half in uninterrupted creative enthusiasm. The libretto was written by the poet Francesco Maria Piave and is an excellent adaptation of The Lady with the Camellias by the French writer Alexandre Dumas. Verdi has staged the failed Parisian courtesan Violetta, who is taken over by pure and selfless love. Violetta is the archetype of a woman to whom only love sets the limits of freedom. La Traviata was first staged in Slovenia in 1867 by a German acting ensemble at the Provincial Theater in Ljubljana. This installation (15th in a row) is the work of established director Lutz Hochstraate. Together with his creative team, he staged a well-known love story on the Ljubljana stage, a drama of great emotions, which he based mainly on the psychological deepening of the characters, their intimate pain and the critique of social conditions. The creators kept the story in a historical context, but still left it enough freedom to develop a lively and authentic stage setting. which he relied primarily on the psychological deepening of the characters, on their intimate pain, and on a critique of social conditions.
