La Traviata geht auf das Leben der Pariser Kurtisane Marie Duplessis zurück. Als die 23-jährig an der Schwindsucht starb, fasste Alexandre Dumas d. J. ihre Geschichte in einen Zeitroman, später in ein Bühnenstück, das Verdi 1852 gesehen hatte. Er erkannte das Potenzial der Vorlage für seine eigenen musikdramatischen Ziele. Die Kurtisane, die Verdi Violetta nennt, versucht, ihre Krankheit durch ausgelassene Feste zu verdrängen. Alfredo Germont, ein junger Mann aus gutem Haus, verliebt sich in sie. Auf Drängen seines Vaters verlässt Alfredo Violetta. Doch ihr nahender Tod bringt eine überraschende Wendung. Der Schluss der Traviata, wenn Violetta mit einer trauermarschartigen Melodie ihr Leben aushaucht, gilt als unübertroffener Geniestreich Verdis.

La Traviata goes back to the life of the Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis. When the 23-year-old died of consumption, Alexandre Dumas d. J. turned her story into a period novel, later into a play that Verdi had seen in 1852. He recognized the potential of the template for his own musico-dramatic goals. The courtesan, whom Verdi calls Violetta, tries to suppress her illness with boisterous parties. Alfredo Germont, a young man from a good family, falls in love with her. Alfredo leaves Violetta at his father's urging. But her approaching death brings a surprising twist. The end of the Traviata , when Violetta breathes her last with a funeral march-like melody, is considered to be Verdi's unsurpassed stroke of genius.
