LA VOIX HUMAINE
Francis Poulenc set the last phone call a woman made to her lover in his 1959 lyrical tragedy La voix humaine based on the play by Jean Cocteau. In the one-act play, the woman tries to make one last emotional contact through the phone and to keep an idea of ​​her lover. But the conversation remains the lonely monologue of the lonely woman. The piece addresses the social interaction with the already established medium of the telephone. Communicating with it means making everyday life easier through technical development, but human speechlessness remains the same.

THE TELEPHONE, OR L´AMOUR Á TROIS
Gian Carlo Menotti's comic one-act opera The Telephone, or L'amour à trois (1947) shows a couple with a problem: the telephone. Ben wants to propose to Lucy before he leaves, but Lucy is so fixed on her phone that he just doesn't get a chance to speak. The only way to make yourself heard is to call Lucy and propose to her over the phone. Ben realizes that a love between him and Lucy will always be a threesome, a love with the phone. Menotti shows in his libretto that the telephone has already established itself in society.
