Small 6 kg smooth-haired animal found in a Moscow park and sent into space in 1957 aboard a hastily built craft; here is a hell of a dog that well deserved to be dedicated to an opera. It's done with Russell Hepplewhite, a young British composer, who won the prize for best production at the Armel International Opera Festival with this work for children and families. Stephanie Gurga, Anne Schwaller and the Guillaume Brothers tell us a story of rockets and dubious scientists, the dream of humanity and the drama of death.

A coproduction NOF – New Opera Friborg – Neue Oper Freiburg, Compagnie Pieces Attaches and Equilibre-Nuithonie. In collaboration with the Opéra Comique, Paris.

Die NOF-Saison startet mit einer Oper für das junge Publikum, nämlich mit Laika, dem Weltraumhund. Diese 2013 von Russell Hepplewhite (Komposition) und Tim Zealand (Libretto) komponierte Oper wird zum ersten Mal in der Schweiz aufgeführt. Die Oper erzählt die Geschichte vom ersten Lebewesen, das ins Weltall geschickt wurde. Laika, der Hund, der zuerst im Gorki-Park in Moskau gefunden und dann ins Weltall befördert wurde, wird zu einer Ikone der Zeitgeschichte. Ursprünglich war die Oper dazu bestimmt, in den Schulklassen des Vereinigten Königreiches aufgeführt zu werden. Ihr Erfolg war so enorm, dass die großen Opernhäuser Europas sich regelrecht um sie rissen. Eine Oper, die extra für Kinder komponiert wurde, ist selten. Die Oper Laika zeichnet in einzigartiger Weise ihr interaktives, didaktisches und wunderbares Universum aus.
