Les œuvres de Saint-Saëns et Poulenc mettent la musique pour deux pianos à l’honneur. Au programme également, une création d’Aline Gorisse, écrite dans le cadre de l’Académie des jeunes compositrices de l’orchestre. En 1886, Saint-Saëns compose Le Carnaval des animaux, pour se délasser après une tournée, alors que Poulenc écrit son Concerto pour deux pianos à la demande de la princesse de Polignac (il en assure la création en 1932 à La Fenice de Venise). Les deux partitions, qui allient une poésie raffinée à un humour irrésistible, multiplient les références stylistiques et les citations (voire les autocitations) : Offenbach, Berlioz et Rossini chez Saint-Saëns ; Bach, Mozart, le music-hall et le gamelan balinais chez Poulenc. Quant au jeune Prokofiev, il imagine dans sa Symphonie n° 1 dite « Classique » (1917) ce que Haydn composerait s’il vivait au début du XXe siècle.

The works of Saint-Saëns and Poulenc put music for two pianos in the spotlight. Also on the program, a creation by Aline Gorisse , written as part of the orchestra's Academy of Young Composers. In 1886, Saint-Saëns composed The Carnival of the Animals , to relax after a tour, while Poulenc wrote his Concerto for two pianos at the request of the Princess de Polignac (he premiered it in 1932 at La Fenice in Venice) . The two scores, which combine refined poetry with irresistible humor, multiply the stylistic references and quotations (even self-citations): Offenbach, Berlioz and Rossini in Saint-Saëns; Bach, Mozart, music hall and Balinese gamelan at Poulenc. As for the young Prokofiev, he imagined in his so-called “Classical” Symphony No. 1 (1917) what Haydn would compose if he lived at the beginning of the 20th century.
