Ein Impresario in Nöten: Keine richtige Spielstätte, kein Geld und dann auch noch die dauernden Streitigkeiten seines aus Stargästen und Lokalgrößen zusammengewürfelten Ensembles. Dabei soll doch die Aufführung der Oper Romulus und Ersilia als Benefizgala endlich wieder Geld in die Kassen des gebeutelten Theaters spühlen. Als auch noch die erhofften Zuschüsse ausbleiben, steht das Unternehmen vor dem Aus. Doch Gott sei Dank gibt es Mama Agata, Mutter der zweiten Sängerin im Ensemble: Sie springt nicht nur für die abgereiste Mezzosopranstin ein, sondern versetzt auch kurzerhand ihren Schmuck, um dem Impresario finanziell unter die Arme zu greifen. Viva la Mamma!

Gaetano Donizettis 1827 in Mailand uraufgeführte Farce ist eine liebevolle Parodie auf die „Sitten und Unsitten des Theaters“. Augenzwinkernd parodiert er dabei die große italienische Oper des Belcantos, zu deren herausragenden Vertretern der Komponist gehörte, ebenso wie die schon zu Donizettis Zeiten vorhandene ewige Geldnot der Theater, denen die Künstler mit Kreativität und Humor begegnen. Jede Ähnlichkeit mit realen Ereignissen oder lebenden Personen ist natürlich rein zufällig.

An impresario in trouble: no real venue, no money and then the constant arguments of his ensemble, which is made up of star guests and local greats. The performance of the opera Romulus and Ersilia as a benefit gala should finally bring money back into the coffers of the battered theater. When the hoped-for grants didn't materialize either, the company was on the brink of collapse. But thank God there is Mama Agata, mother of the second singer in the ensemble: she not only stands in for the departed mezzo-soprano, but also moves her jewelry to help the impresario financially. Viva la Mama!

Gaetano Donizetti's farce, which premiered in Milan in 1827, is an affectionate parody of the “customs and habits of the theatre”. With a wink, he parodies the great Italian opera of bel canto, of which the composer was one of the outstanding representatives, as well as the eternal lack of money in the theaters, which already existed in Donizetti's time, which the artists countered with creativity and humor. Any resemblance to real events or living persons is, of course, purely coincidental.
