Cocteau and Milhaud started with a bloody news item, which they transposed into the decor of a café, multiplying the references both to film music and to the laments of itinerant musicians who were going, telling stories of crimes.

The beauty of this work lies in the way in which Cocteau and Milhaud succeeded in transfiguring the news item into a moving popular lyric poem. We recognize a mixture of realism and lyricism, of everyday life and poetry, which will flourish in certain pre-war French films.

The story refers to a whole mythology of cinema. The father, to disqualify the "madness" of his daughter, accuses her of "being a movie character", mad about this madman. And, in a sense, these are indeed two madnesses that confront each other: one feminine, dominated by hallucinatory images, and as if definitively settled in the pain of waiting, the other masculine, the passion of an adventurer who plays with his life, and who, sadistically, works out a game in which the partner must ignore the rule. The fatal meeting of their ordinary follies: this theme appealed to Milhaud because he saw in it the possibility of treating a news item as a tragedy. However, his music never allows itself to scream at death, it wraps the drama in a troubled, gently equivocal emotion. Far from all pathos, she opens up to poetry,

The decision to play this piece in the natural setting of a café stems from the idea that under the writing of Cocteau/Milhaud, realism and poetry go hand in hand; it is by pushing the effect of reality as hard as possible that we have the best chance of grasping its poetry.

Cocteau et Milhaud sont partis d’un fait divers sanglant, qu’ils ont transposé dans le décor d’un café, multipliant les références aussi bien aux musiques de film qu’aux complaintes des musiciens ambulants qui allaient, racontant des histoires de crimes.

La beauté de cette œuvre tient à la façon dont Cocteau et Milhaud ont réussi à transfigurer le fait divers en un émouvant poème lyrique populaire. On y reconnaît un mélange de réalisme et de lyrisme, de quotidienneté et de poésie, qui s’épanouira dans certains films français d’avant-guerre.

L’histoire se réfère à toute une mythologie du cinéma. Le père, pour disqualifier la «folie» de sa fille, lui reproche «d’être un personnage de cinéma», folle de ce fou. Et, en un sens, ce sont bien deux folies qui s’affrontent : l’une féminine, dominée par des images hallucinatoires, et comme définitivement installée dans la douleur de l’attente, l’autre masculine, la passion d’un aventurier qui joue avec sa vie, et qui, de façon sadique, élabore un jeu dont la partenaire doit ignorer la règle. La rencontre fatale de leurs folies ordinaires : ce thème séduisait Milhaud car il y voyait la possibilité de traiter un fait divers comme une tragédie. Pourtant, jamais sa musique ne s’autorise à hurler à la mort, elle enveloppe le drame d’une émotion trouble, doucement équivoque. Loin de tout pathétisme, elle s’ouvre à la poésie, respectueuse du mystère d’un geste, ne prétendant jamais dévoiler ce qui peut l’être, «l’infracassable noyau de la nuit”.

Le parti-pris de jouer cette pièce dans le décor naturel d’un café, tient à l’idée que sous l’écriture de Cocteau/Milhaud, réalisme et poésie sont de mèche ; c’est en poussant au plus fort l’effet de réalité qu’on a le plus de chances d’en saisir la poésie.
