Louise Alder has become a firm favourite at Leeds Lieder following triumphant performances at the festival in recent seasons.

Her Strauss – Four Last Songs, given as part of our COVID-19/Leeds Town Hall season, will linger in the memory of many as one of the most remarkable concerts of recent years. The Guardian described her and her duo partner Joseph Middleton as “classical song’s brightest artists”, going on to write: “Alder is in glorious voice, her soprano fresh and untethered…her high notes gleam, and her words are direct and communicative…Middleton’s playing fills in everything those words can’t say, perfectly calibrated to support Alder but huge in its expressive scope.”

Transcendental Mahler and the pioneering poetry of Emily Dickinson as set by Copland stand either side of the interval. Lines from the closing song of the closing recital sum up Alder’s generosity as a performer perfectly: “I hope your troubles are few, All my good wishes go with you tonight.” Could there be a better postlude for a Festival?!
