Liebestränke haben in der Literatur Hochkonjunktur: Man denke nur an die mittelalterliche Geschichte von Tristan und Isolde, die – mehr als 30 Jahre vor Wagners Musikdrama – auch Eingang in Donizettis Oper gefunden hat. Den etwas einfältigen Nemorino bringt diese Legende dazu, die Annäherung an die angebetete Adina ebenfalls mittels eines Zaubertranks etwas beschleunigen zu wollen, den ihm der Scharlatan Dulcamara feilbietet.

Doch ähnlich wie bei Tristan und Isolde führt die Einnahme nicht zum eigentlich anvisierten Ziel. Denn als Nemorino betrunken auf Adina trifft – die berauschende Wirkung des Tranks ist nämlich auf seine hohen Prozente zurückzuführen –, wendet sich diese verärgert ab und beschließt kurzerhand, den schneidigen Soldaten Belcore zu ehelichen. Da braucht es eine zweite Flasche »Liebestrank« und ausgiebige Hilfe von Gevatter Zufall, damit Nemorino und Adina doch noch zueinanderfinden und am Ende die ganze Dorfgemeinschaft von der Wirkung des Elixiers restlos überzeugt ist. Mit der köstlichen Naivität der Figuren nehmen Donizetti und sein Librettist Felice Romani auf liebevoll-zärtliche Weise Aber- und Leichtgläubigkeit auf die Schippe. Die Musik, die innerhalb von nur drei Wochen entstanden sein soll, gesteht den Protagonisten aber auch berührende, intime Momente zu, nicht nur in der berühmten Arie »Una furtiva lagrima«. Der unerschöpfliche Melodienreichtum macht »L’elisir d’amore« zu einem von Donizettis beliebtesten Bühnenwerken, das nun nach längerer Pause auf den Staatsopernspielplan zurückkehrt.

Love potions are booming in literature: Just think of the medieval story of Tristan and Isolde, which - more than 30 years before Wagner's music drama - also found its way into Donizetti's opera. This legend persuades the somewhat simple-minded Nemorino to also want to speed up his approach to the adored Adina by means of a magic potion that the charlatan Dulcamara offers him for sale.

However, similar to Tristan and Isolde, taking it does not lead to the intended goal. Because when Nemorino meets Adina drunk - the intoxicating effect of the potion is due to its high percentage - she turns away angrily and decides without further ado to marry the dashing soldier Belcore. A second bottle of "love potion" and ample help from Godmother Chance are needed so that Nemorino and Adina can still find each other and in the end the whole village community is completely convinced of the elixir's effect. With the delicious naivety of the characters, Donizetti and his librettist Felice Romani make fun of superstition and credulity in a lovingly tender way. The music, which is said to have been created within just three weeks, also gives the protagonists touching, intimate moments, not only in the famous aria »Una furtiva lagrima«. The inexhaustible wealth of melodies makes »L'elisir d'amore« one of Donizetti's most popular stage works, which is now returning to the state opera repertoire after a long break.
