After the bucolic vision of Stepehn Lawless' L'elisir d'amore in the first season of the reinaugurated Teatro Real, and Mario Gas' costumbrista version in the 2006 performances, Donizetti's opera now arrives set on a beach full of commotion and hustle and bustle.

 

The young Italian stage director Damiano Michieletto transfers the plot from the Basque countryside to the lively Mediterranean coast, recreated by set designer Paolo Fantin, who, with the effective lighting of Alessandro Carletti, succeeds in creating the magic of long summer days and nights conducive to seduction, partying and vice. Adina, the clever and flirtatious protagonist, runs a lively beach bar. Nemorino, her tireless lover, takes advantage of the summer period to raise some money, while Dulcamara, an unscrupulous charlatan, promises happiness by dealing drugs and concoctions. And in this entertaining seaside life, there is no shortage of sailors in search of fun and women, captained by the handsome and cocky Belcore, the archetype of the "beach pimp".
