Bestaat er een meer iconische compositie dan 4’33”? Precies 4 minuten en 33 seconden lang wordt het publiek gewezen op een stilte die helemaal niet blijkt te bestaan. Hate it or love it, met zijn blanco partituur betonneert John Cage zijn status als een van de grote muzikale vernieuwers van de vorige eeuw. Meer algemeen staat 4’33” symbool voor het vrije artistieke klimaat van het naoorlogse New York en bij uitbreiding Amerika. Onder leiding van Manoj Kamps brengen HERMESensemble en I SOLISTI een greep uit de rijke neerslag daarvan. 

Morton Feldman stond weliswaar zeer dicht bij Cage, maar ontwikkelde een uiterst unieke muzikale taal. For Samuel Beckett is een laat maar karakteristiek werk: aangehouden tonen werken onregelmatig op elkaar in en geven gestalte aan een schijnbaar doelloos voortvloeiende muziek. Less is more, zo weet ook Terry Riley, al opteert hij juist voor een ritmisch strakke organisatie van zijn materiaal. Met In C legde hij zo de fundamenten voor de minimal music.

Is there a more iconic composition than 4'33"? Lasting exactly 4 minutes and 33 seconds, it directs the audience's attention to a silence that turns out not to exist at all. Love it or hate it, with its blank score, John Cage cements his status as one of the great musical innovators of the last century. More broadly, 4'33" symbolizes the free artistic climate of post-war New York and, by extension, America. Under the direction of Manoj Kamps, HERMESensemble and I SOLISTI present a selection from the rich expression of that era.

Although Morton Feldman was very close to Cage, he developed an extremely unique musical language. "For Samuel Beckett" is a late but characteristic work: sustained tones interact irregularly, giving shape to seemingly aimless flowing music. Less is more, as Terry Riley also knows, but he opts for a rhythmically tight organization of his material. With "In C," he laid the foundations for minimal music.
