Aucun mot ne sera prononcé au cours de ce concert. Le verbe y est pourtant omniprésent. Selon Peter Eötvös, « les cordes autorisent des articulations « linguistiques » éminemment subtiles », rendant possible ce paradoxe : une musique épistolaire.

« J’y serai seul avec toi. Personne d’autre avec nous », confie Leoš Janáček à Kamila Stöslova, sa muse et amour impossible, à propos de son Deuxième Quatuor dit « Lettres intimes ». S’écartant de tout modèle préconçu, ce quatuor se veut un miroir de l’imaginaire amoureux du compositeur, reflet des sentiments : de leur nature fluctuante autant que de leur urgence et instantanéité. Un sentiment d’éphémère que l’on retrouve dans les Sept Papillons, composée par Kaija Saariaho après son opéra L’Amour de loin. S’intéressant quant à lui à la correspondance entre Mozart, père et fils, Eötvös confie à l’alto le rôle de Wolfgang et au violoncelle celui de Leopold, le second prodiguant conseil au premier, alors que l’essentiel de leur vie reste non-dit.

Deviating from any preconceived model, this quartet aims to be a mirror of the composer's amorous imagination, a reflection of feelings: of their fluctuating nature as much as of their urgency and immediacy. A feeling of ephemeral found in the Seven Butterflies , composed by Kaija Saariaho after his opera L'Amour de loin. Taking an interest in the correspondence between Mozart, father and son, Eötvös entrusts the viola with the role of Wolfgang and the cello with that of Leopold, the latter providing advice to the former, while most of their lives remain unresolved. -said.
