Un véritable mystère entoure ce dernier opéra de Monteverdi. Sa version originale ayant disparu, les musicologues n’ont eu d’autre choix que d’utiliser une copie pourtant très différente du livret. Néanmoins, Le couronnement de Poppée demeure un bijou de l’opéra italien, et s’impose comme une œuvre novatrice et efficace, où la musique se marie à l’action dramatique qui nous confronte à nos propres contradictions.
Ambitieux et cruel, l’empereur Néron est prêt à tout pour arriver à ses fins. Sans égard pour son épouse Octavie il fait de l’irrésistible Poppée sa maîtresse. Tout aussi ambitieuse, cette dernière a les yeux rivés sur la couronne. Ensemble, rien ni personne ne pourra les arrêter. Octavie exilée, Poppée accèdera au trône. Victoire de l’amour adultère ou triomphe du désir charnel ?

A real mystery surrounds this last opera by Monteverdi. Its original version having disappeared, the musicologists had no choice but to use a very different copy of the libretto. Nevertheless, The Coronation of Poppea remains a jewel of Italian opera, and stands out as an innovative and effective work, where the music blends with the dramatic action that confronts us with our own contradictions.
Ambitious and cruel, the Emperor Nero is ready to do anything to achieve his ends. Without regard for his wife Octavie, he makes the irresistible Poppea his mistress. Equally ambitious, the latter has her sights set on the crown. Together, nothing and no one can stop them. Octavia exiled, Poppea will accede to the throne. Victory of adulterous love or triumph of carnal desire?
