200 years ago, Goethe published his "West-Eastern Divan", together with the insight: "Orient and Occident can no longer be separated". And building bridges between cultures in the 18th century seemed as little a matter of course as it does today. In Austria-Hungary, for example, fear of the Ottomans persisted after the sieges of Vienna. At the same time, everything Oriental exercised an exotic fascination. Mozart's operas "The Abduction from the Seraglio" and "Cosi fan tutte" tell of this fear-tickling, as does Joseph Haydn's "The Apothecary".

“Lo Speziale” was premiered – praised by many as Haydn's best opera! – 1768 for the opening of the opera house at Esterhazy Palace, where the composer was the first conductor to head the orchestra. Empress Maria Theresia also attended one of the performances of this opera buffa, which is based on a template by Carlo Goldoni and began its triumphal march from Hungary.

The loud compagney is now bringing the confusing comedy back to the stage. True to their historical performance practice. As an international co-production with the liebestheater Schloss Kochberg, the Teatru Manoel in Valletta/Malta and the Theater Putbus. A laborious undertaking, especially since the third act had to be partially reconstructed due to missing notes.

On the other hand, the libretto of this musical comedy, which tells the story of the enterprising pharmacist Sempronio, is complete. He has his eye on his pretty foster daughter Grilletta, but primarily speculates on the lavish dowry. With the bon vivant Volpino, a rival soon appears on the scene. And Sempronio shouldn't underestimate the pharmacist's assistant Mengone, who genuinely has a passion for Grilletta. A charade of deception begins, in the course of which two Turkish noblemen unexpectedly open the pharmacy...

As catchy as the plot is, Haydn's singing parts are just as challenging. An extraordinary cast must have been available to him at the time. And so it is in this new production.

Vor 200 Jahren veröffentlichte Goethe seinen „West-östlichen Divan“, nebst der Erkenntnis: „Orient und Okzident sind nicht mehr zu trennen“. Und war schien der Brückenschlag zwischen den Kulturen im 18. Jahrhundert so wenig selbstverständlich wie heute. In Österreich-Ungarn etwa wirkte nach den Belagerungen Wiens die Furcht vor den Osmanen fort. Zugleich aber übte alles Orientalische eine exotische Faszination aus. Mozarts Opern „Die Entführung aus dem Serail“ und „Cosi fan tutte“ erzählen von diesem Angstkitzel ebenso wie Joseph Haydns „Der Apotheker“.

Uraufgeführt wurde „Lo Speziale“ – von vielen als Haydns beste Oper gepriesen! – 1768 zur Eröffnung des Opernhauses auf Schloss Esterhazy, wo der Komponist als erster Kapellmeister dem Orchester vorstand. Auch Kaiserin Maria Theresia besuchte eine der Aufführungen dieser opera buffa, die auf einer Vorlage von Carlo Goldoni basiert und von Ungarn aus ihren Siegeszug antrat.

Die lautten compagney bringt das verwirrungsreiche Lustspiel nun wieder auf die Bühne. Getreu ihrer historischen Aufführungspraxis. Als internationale Koproduktion mit dem Liebhabertheater Schloss Kochberg, dem Teatru Manoel in Valetta/Malta sowie dem Theater Putbus. Ein aufwändiges Unterfangen, zumal der dritte Akt teilweise, aufgrund verschollener Noten, rekonstruiert werden musste.

Lückenlos vorhanden ist hingegen das Libretto dieser musikalischen Komödie, die vom geschäftstüchtigen Apotheker Sempronio erzählt. Der hat ein Auge auf seine hübsche Ziehtochter Grilletta geworfen, spekuliert allerdings in erster Linie auf die üppige Mitgift. Mit dem Lebemann Volpino tritt bald ein Nebenbuhler auf den Plan. Und auch den Apotheker-Gehilfen Mengone, aufrichtig für Grilletta entflammt, sollte Sempronio nicht unterschätzen. Eine Scharade der Täuschungen hebt an, in deren Zuge unversehens auch zwei türkische Edelleute in der Apotheke aufschlagen…

So eingängig die Handlung ist, so herausfordernd sind Haydns Gesangspartien. Eine außergewöhnliche Besetzung muss ihm seinerzeit zur Verfügung gestanden haben. Und so ist es auch in dieser Neuproduktion.
