«Love, destruction-laden love, without which opera remains cold»: this was the stuff that Donizetti demanded of material for an opera – and it was what he got in spades from Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor. The fragile Lucia, mourning the death of her mother, has fallen in love with Edgardo, the mortal enemy of her brother Enrico. Edgardo is willing to disregard the longstanding hatred between the two families, but Lucia fears her brother’s hard-heartedness, and begs Edgardo to keep their union secret. Enrico is enraged when he hears of his sister’s love for Edgardo – for Enrico has arranged to marry Lucia off to the rich Arturo Bucklaw, hoping to rescue his own debt-laden finances in the process. With the aid of forged letters, Lucia is convinced of Edgardo’s infidelity, and Enrico unrelentingly pressures her until she agrees to the arranged marriage. But she is ultimately broken by her unrequited love. As if possessed, she stabs Arturo on their wedding night. Her own death becomes Lucia’s only possible escape.And when Edgardo hears her death knell sounding, he in turn takes his own life.

The world premiere of Lucia in 1835 was one of the greatest triumphs the Neapolitan theater has ever experienced and remains a sensation to this day. Its popularity is in part thanks to Lucia’s famous mad scene, one of the most moving operatic scenes of all time, which doubles as a vocal and dramatic tour de force display for the singer in the title role. The Russian soprano Irina Lungu could be won for this artistic tour de force. Piotr Beczała returns to the Opernhaus to play her beloved. Tatjana Gürbaca, well-known in Zurich for her precise character direction, directs for the stage, and Italian conductor Speranza Scappucci appears at the podium of the Philharmonia.

Instead of an introductory matinee, this time we have filmed a "making of" for our new production Lucia di Lammermoor: In interviews with conductor Speranza Scappucci, director Tatjana Gürbaca, set and lighting designer Klaus Grünberg and costume designer Silke Willrett you will find out everything about the concept of this new production, and you can watch the artists at work in numerous rehearsal excerpts.

"Love, destructive, violent love, without which every opera has to stay cold": That was what Donizetti demanded of an operatic material - and it was also what the novel The Bride of Lammermoor gave himby Walter Scott delivered in the highest intensity: The fragile Lucia has fallen in love with Edgardo, the mortal enemy of her brother Enrico. Edgardo is ready to overcome the old hatred between the families, but Lucia fears the hard-heartedness of her brother and asks Edgardo to keep their connection secret. In fact, Enrico is furious when he learns of his sister's love for Edgardo - he had planned to marry Lucia to the rich Arturo Bucklaw, from whom he hopes to secure his own existence, which is threatened by debts. Forged letters are supposed to convince Lucia of Edgardo's infidelity; Mercilessly, Enrico puts his sister under pressure until she agrees to the wedding. But at the pain of her unlived love, Lucia breaks. No longer in control of your senses, she stabs Arturo to death on her wedding night. For Lucia, her own death becomes the only possible liberation from a desperately hopeless situation. When Edgardo hears the death bells ring, he takes his own life.

The premiere of Lucia in 1835 was one of the greatest triumphs that the Neapolitan theater had ever experienced. Lucia's famous mad scene, one of the most touching opera scenes of all, played a major role in this success, which continues to this day. In our new production is Irina Lungu Lucia. The Russian soprano who performed in Zurich as Violetta in Verdi's La traviatawas to be experienced is a welcome guest at houses such as La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Vienna and Berlin State Operas and many other important opera stages. Piotr Beczała will return to the opera house as her lover Edgardo, while Massimo Cavalletti will sing her brother Enrico. Tatjana Gürbaca, who is well-known in Zurich for her precise leadership, will direct, while the Italian conductor Speranza Scappucci will be at the podium at the Philharmonia.
