In great political and financial difficulty, Enrico sees only one way out to save his family from the announced ruin: to make the rich and powerful Lord Arturo accept that he takes his sister Lucia as his wife. But Lucia is already secretly in love with another man, to whom she has sworn loyalty. Torn between her family duties and her love oath, she will sink into madness – murderous madness! Although he was no longer an unknown in 1835, it was indeed with Lucia di Lammermoor that Donizetti definitively established himself as one of the greatest geniuses of his generation. En grande difficulté politique et financière, Enrico ne voit qu’une issue pour sauver sa famille de la ruine annoncée : faire accepter au riche et puissant Lord Arturo qu’il prenne sa soeur Lucia pour épouse. Walter Scott lui offre avec son roman historique (1819) un cadre idéal pour mettre en valeur les émotions et les affects ici à l’oeuvre.
