When a conductor who is so important for the original sound movement as John Eliot Gardiner makes a guest appearance with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe at Herbstgold, then the program alone can be expected to be something extraordinary. Indeed, Sir John has selected magnificent classical marvels that are beyond the ordinary. Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 90, for example, which comes up with the surprise that the theme of the slow introduction, suddenly lively, also dominates the Allegro. Bubbling youthful energy and a never-ending desire to make music also dominate the enchanting Symphony No. 3 by the only 18-year-old Franz Schubert. The longings of the opera stage, sometimes dramatic, sometimes introverted, dominate three of Carl Maria von Weber's great arias: Rezia from Oberon and Agathe from Freischütz are among the most important soprano roles between Mozart and Wagner. The internationally acclaimed Englishwoman Lucy Crowe is the soloist.

Wenn ein für die Originalklangbewegung so maßgeblicher Dirigent wie John Eliot Gardiner mit dem Chamber Orchestra of Europe bei Herbstgold gastiert, dann ist schon vom Programm her Außergewöhnliches zu erwarten. Und wirklich hat Sir John prachtvolle klassische Wunderwerke ausgewählt, die jenseits des Üblichen liegen. Joseph Haydns Sinfonie Nr. 90 etwa, die schon mit der Überraschung aufwartet, dass das Thema der langsamen Einleitung, plötzlich quicklebendig geworden, auch das Allegro beherrscht. Sprudelnde Jugendkräfte und nie versiegende Musizierlust beherrschen auch die hinreißende Sinfonie Nr. 3 des erst 18-jährigen Franz Schubert. Die Sehnsüchte der Opernbühne, einmal dramatisch, einmal introvertiert, beherrschen hingegen drei große Arien Carl Maria von Webers: Die Rezia aus dem „Oberon“ und die Agathe aus dem „Freischütz“ zählen zu den bedeutendsten Sopranpartien zwischen Mozart und Wagner. Als Solistin ist die international gefeierte Engländerin Lucy Crowe aufgeboten.
