On 21 March 1906 Edvard Grieg gave one of his last concerts in the Hals Brothers' Concert Hall in Oslo (known then as Kristiania), along with the young opera singer Borghild Bryhn, who was a student with his wife Nina. Grieg was a mature man approaching the end of his career, while the singer was making her debut.

'Miss Bryhn will have a bright future if she continues to develop. She has a good voice and she learns well … I myself played as well as I could and felt it was a good performance, Nina thought I had never played so well,' wrote Grieg in his journal. 

The original concert programme, which has been kept, shows that in addition to the lieder that Borghild Bryhn sang, Grieg also played Moods, the Holberg Suite and Wedding-Day at Troldhaugen. With the concert programme as the starting point pianist Ole Christian Haagenrud and soprano Lydia Hoen Tjore presented the album Concert 1906 in 2023.

Both artists have performed at the Bergen International Festival before. In Troldsalen Hoen Tjore and Haagenrud will replicate some of the mood of the concert in Kristiania over a hundred years ago, and will relate stories from Grieg's own notes and letters.

21. mars 1906 holdt Edvard Grieg en av sine aller siste konserter i Brødrene Hals' koncertsal i Kristiania, sammen med den unge operasangeren Borghild Bryhn som studerte hos hans kone Nina. Grieg var da blitt en eldre mann som nærmet seg slutten av sin karriere, mens konserten var Bryhns debut.  

«Frøken Bryhn vil ha en vakker Fremtid, om hun er udviklingsdygtig. Stemmen er smuk og hun er lærevillig … Selv spillede jeg så godt jeg kunde og forekom mig selv helt oppe. Nina mente, jeg havde aldrig spillet så godt», skrev Grieg i dagboken sin. 

Originalprogrammet for konserten er bevart, og i tillegg til romansene der Borghild Bryhn medvirket, fremførte Grieg blant annet Stemninger, Holberg-suiten og Bryllupsdag på Troldhaugen. Med programmet for konserten som utgangspunkt, kom pianist Ole Christian Haagenrud og sopran Lydia Hoen Tjore med albumet Concert 1906 i 2023.  

Begge to har flere festspillopptredener bak seg. I Troldsalen henter Hoen Tjore og Haagenrud frem noe av stemningen fra konserten i Kristiania for mer enn et århundre siden, og forteller historier fra Griegs egne notater og brev.
