Macbeth is the name of Shakespeare's famous tragedy and one of Verdi's most popular operas. The titular hero of the opera is a Scottish military leader, in which the usual human vice, vanity, grows into an uncontrollable mania for power. "Oh, this thirst for the throne!" - sings his wife, the treacherous Lady Macbeth. The most villainous couple in the history of opera act together: he kills, she pushes to commit crimes. "Macbeth" is a real "horror opera" with a bewitching medieval flavor: witches conjure here, ghosts appear, blades smoke from blood, knights feast, and a somnambulist roams the castle. The boiling of Shakespearean passions Verdi fully conveyed in his music. One of the most difficult parts not only in Macbeth, but in the entire world operatic repertoire is the part of Lady Macbeth. Verdi conceived the heroine as evil and ugly, but on stage Lady Macbeth is strong, a passionate beauty that her husband simply cannot resist. The performance on a Scottish theme was staged at the Mariinsky Theater by Scottish director David McVicar.

Титульный герой оперы – шотландский военачальник, в котором обычный человеческий порок, тщеславие, разрастается до неудержимой мании власти. «О, эта жажда трона!» – поет его супруга, коварная леди Макбет. Самая злодейская пара в истории оперы действует сообща: он – убивает, она – толкает на преступления. «Макбет» – настоящая «опера ужасов» с завораживающим средневековым колоритом: здесь колдуют ведьмы, являются призраки, клинки дымятся от крови, рыцари пируют, а по замку бродит сомнамбула. Кипение шекспировских страстей Верди сполна передал в своей музыке. Одна из самых сложных партий не только в «Макбете», но и во всем мировом оперном репертуаре – партия леди Макбет. Верди задумал героиню злой и уродливой, но на сцене леди Макбет – это сильная, страстная красавица, противостоять которой муж попросту не в силах. Спектакль на шотландскую тему поставил в Мариинском театре шотландский режиссер Дэвид Маквикар.
