French director Vincent Boussard began his career specializing in early operas, before scoring a series of major international successes by bringing his approach to the romantic repertoire. He created his Madama Butterfly at the Hamburg State Opera together with an international fashion icon: Christian Lacroix designed the costumes for this production. The touching and tragic story of the geisha Cio-Cio San is given an opulent and stylish outing here, with the focus clearly on the title role, impressively and movingly played by Greek soprano Alexia Voulgaridou. Pinkerton is played by Romanian tenor Teodor Ilincai, while Luari Vasar excels as the sinister Sharpless. A production which brings the story's psychological aspects to the foreground, and where the music is not merely a beautiful byproduct, but rather an expression of the work's profundity.
