The great Italian composer Giacomo Puccini wrote the opera Madama Butterfly at the end of 1903, noting on the score the time when he put down his pen: it was December 27, 1903, a little before midnight. Although the author believed in the success of his new work in advance, at the premiere in Milan's Scala  on February 17, 1904, at the end of the performance there were numerous whistles and general indignation. However, Puccini was not particularly excited by this because he was completely convinced of the quality of his work. The performance in Brescia in May 1904 gave it its rightful place, and that's when the triumphant journey of this opera began on Italian and world stages.

Madame Butterflyis one of Puccini's most moving operas, which tells the story of the unfortunate fate of Cio-Cio San, a young Japanese woman called Butterfly, and US Navy lieutenant BF Pinkerton. Driven by her endless love for Pinkerton, Cio-Cio San converts to Christianity, but neither that nor all her other efforts to keep her love with her were enough, and in the end, abandoned, she gives up on life. A dramatic and poignant story about the collision of two worlds in which unconditional love was not enough for happiness and a peaceful life, stirred up the audience and critics from the very beginning, and continues to enchant opera lovers to this day. After more than fifteen years, the Opera of the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb once again has this immortal work in its repertoire, which will be staged in co-production withFondazione Arena di Verona , renowned organizer of one of the world's most famous summer opera festivals.

JOSIP ŠEGO completed his conducting studies at the Zagreb Academy of Music and won the Dean's Award for conducting Menotti's opera Medium . Immediately after graduation, he was hired as an accompanist at the Zagreb Opera, and in 2005 he became a conductor, making his debut with Vincenzo Bellini's opera Capuleti i Montecchi. Equal to many performances of the opera and ballet repertoire of the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb.

ANDREA CIGNI graduated in directing from the Faculty of Art, Music and Theater in Bologna, and gained experience as an actor and participant in dance productions. He made his debut as a director in 2006 in Cremona with a music and dance production entitled Madrigals of Buenos Aires , and since then he has been directing opera works throughout his native Italy, often visiting numerous European and international theaters.

Veliki talijanski skladatelj Giacomo Puccini napisao je operu Madama Butterfly krajem 1903., zabilježivši na partituri  i vrijeme kada je odložio pero: bilo je to 27. prosinca 1903., malo prije ponoći. Iako je autor unaprijed vjerovao u uspjeh svojega novog djela, na praizvedbi u milanskoj Scali 17. veljače 1904., na kraju izvedbe uslijedili su brojni zvižduci i sveopće negodovanje. No, Puccinija to nije osobito uzbudilo jer je bio posve uvjeren u kvalitetu svojega djela. Izvedba u Bresci u svibnju 1904. godine dala mu je za pravo i tada započinje trijumfalan put ove opere po talijanskim i svjetskim pozornicama.

Madama Butterfly jedna je od najdirljivih Puccinijevih opera koja pripovijeda o nesretnoj sudbini Cio-Cio San, mlade Japanke zvane Butterfly  / Leptirica, i poručnika američke mornarice B. F. Pinkertona. Potaknuta beskrajnom ljubavlju prema Pinkertonu Cio-Cio San prelazi na kršćanstvo, no niti to, kao ni sva ostala njezina nastojanja da zadrži svoju ljubav uz sebe, nije bilo dovoljno te ona na kraju, ostavljena, odustaje od života. Dramatična i potresna priča o srazu dvaju svjetova u kojima bezuvjetna ljubav nije bila dovoljna za sreću i miran život, uzburkala je publiku i kritiku već na samom početku, ne prestajući očaravati ljubitelje opere sve do danas. Poslije više od petnaest godina Opera zagrebačkoga Hrvatskog narodnog kazališta ponovno ima na repertoaru ovo besmrtno djelo, koje će na scenu biti postavljeno u koprodukciji s Fondazione Arena di Verona, uglednim organizatorom  jednoga od najpoznatijih svjetskih ljetnih opernih festivala.

JOSIP ŠEGO je studij dirigiranja završio na zagrebačkoj Muzičkoj akademiji i dobitnik je Dekanove nagrade za ravnanje Menottijevom operom Medium.  Odmah poslije diplome u zagrebačkoj je Operi angažiran kao korepetitor, a 2005. dobiva status dirigenta, debitiravši s operom Vincenza Bellinija Capuleti i Montecchi. Ravna mnogim izvedbama opernoga i baletnog repertoara Hrvatskoga narodnog kazališta u Zagrebu.

ANDREA CIGNI je diplomirao režiju na Fakultetu za umjetnost, glazbu i kazalište u Bologni, a iskustvo je stjecao i kao glumac te sudionik plesnih produkcija. Kao redatelj debitirao je 2006. u Cremoni s glazbeno-plesnom produkcijom pod naslovom Madrigali Buenos Airesa i od tada režira operna djela diljem rodne Italije, često  gostujući u brojnim europskim i svjetskim kazalištima.
