In contrast to Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Händel, Antonio Caldara as a baroque composer is only familiar to insiders today. His oratorio Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo (Magdalena at the feet of Christ) shows that he does not have to hide from the mighty triumvirate . All musicologists who deal with the work are of one mind: this oratorio is one of the most important sacred compositions of the early 18th century. The audience understands this judgment from the very first hearing. Like few others before him, Caldara is able to put the story of suffering around Magdalena into music with the utmost simplicity and to give each individual figure dramatic depth.
