The poet Miguel de Cervantes is arrested by the Spanish Inquisition for making heretical statements and ends up in a prison full of murderers, thieves, whores and swindlers. They steal his most valuable asset, the manuscript of Don Quixote. To get it back, he devises a daring plan: he stages his novel with the prison inmates as actors. The musical tells with wit and charm about the cleansing power of theater and the "impossible dream" of a better world.
In his production, the poet himself slips into the role of an old nobleman who thinks he is the knight errant Don Quixote and sets out with his servant Sancho Panza to fight evil. As a "knight of the sad figure" he fights against windmills that appear to him as giants, sees castles where there are only dilapidated inns and mistakes an easy girl for the noble lady Dulcinea. Anything for honor, virtue and justice.
