"In one of the villages of La Mancha - I don't want to mention his name - there lived a nobleman recently, the kind who has a spear and an old shield hanging on a hanger, a girth-shaped horse and a restless greyhound. Our Hidalgo was close to fifty years old, his body was muscular, his stature was lean, his face was bony, he usually got up very early, and he especially liked hunting. But we must already mention that the noble knight, whenever he had free hours (and the whole year consisted mostly of free hours), occupied himself with reading chivalric novels, namely with such greedy desire and delight that he later completely neglected the pleasures of hunting because of them, but still also its economy; his curiosity and foolish greed overcame him to such an extent that he gave away month after month of his fields, just so he could buy novels of chivalry to read.

In short, our knight was so engrossed in reading that he read from morning to night, from night to morning, and so little sleep and much reading dried up his brain so that he finally lost his good judgment. When his mind was thus completely disturbed, he had such a strange idea that it surpassed all the folly he had seen before: he saw it as fitting and necessary, both for the enhancement of his own glory and for the sake of the public good, that he should become a knight errant and go around the world on horseback and armed, seeking adventures, and carry out everything that, according to his readings, the knights errant carried out: avenge all kinds of harm, run into every imaginable danger, because if he successfully endures everything, he can gain fame and glory that will last forever." (Cervantes: Don Quixote)

The Knight of La Mancha is a world-famous musical version of Cervantes' novel.
The play will be staged in Hungary through the mediation of THEATRUM MUNDI Theater and Literature Agency.
A sign interpreter will participate in the performance on February 24!

„La Mancha egyik falujában – a nevét említeni sem akarom – élt nemrég egy nemesember, olyasféle, akinél a fogason dárda, régi pajzs függ, van egy girhes paripája meg egy nyughatatlan agara. Hidalgónk életkora közel járt az ötvenhez, testalkata izmos, termete szikár, arca csontos volt, ő maga rendesen igen korán kelt, s a vadászatot különösen kedvelte. Hanem azt már fel kell említenünk, hogy a nemes lovag, valahányszor üres órái valának (s az egész esztendő legnagyobbrészt üres órákból állott), lovagregények olvasásával foglalkozott, mégpedig oly mohó vággyal és gyönyörködéssel, hogy miattok utóbb teljesen elhanyagolta a vadászat élvezeteit, de még tulajdon gazdaságát is; kíváncsisága s balga mohósága úgyannyira elhatalmasodott rajta, hogy holdat hold után adogatott el szántóföldjéből, csak hogy olvasni való lovagregényeket vehessen.

Egyszóval, lovagunk annyira belegabalyodott az olvasásba, hogy reggeltől estig, estétől reggelig mindig csak olvasott, s így a kevés alvás és sok olvasás úgy kiszárította agyvelejét, hogy végre elvesztette józan ítéletét. Midőn elméje így teljesen megháborodott, olyan különös gondolata támadt, hogy túltett minden eddig látott bolondságon: illendőnek és szükségesnek látta mind a saját dicsősége öregbítésére, mind a közjó érdekében, hogy beálljon kóbor lovagnak, s lóháton és fegyveresen járjon szerte a világban, kalandokat keressen, s véghezvigye mindazt, amit olvasmányai szerint a kóbor lovagok véghezvittek: megtoroljon mindennemű sérelmet, belerohanjon minden elképzelhető veszedelembe, mert ha mindent szerencsésen kiáll, örökké fennmaradó hírnévre és dicsőségre tehet szert.” (Cervantes: Don Quijote)
