A young girl, Manon Lescaut, arrives with her brother in Amiens, where she meets the poor but emotional young man Des Grieux. He tells her that his family intended him to go to a monastery, and that he was entrusted to accompany his brother on his way. Des Grieux has a passionate love for Manon at first sight...

However, Geronte, the rich, old merchant, who wants to get Manon for himself, arrives with Manon on the stagecoach. He orders a tooth, convinced that the girl cannot resist his wealth, but Manon has already fallen in love with Des Grieux and escapes with him in the carriage ordered by Geronte.

Manon - unable to bear poverty - succumbed to the persuasion of her profiteer brother, who is also a passionate card player, and moves into Geronte's palace. However, Manon soon realizes that the luxury that surrounds her cannot replace love, and she thinks back to Des Grieux longingly. On one occasion, old Geronte enters Manon's bedroom to admire her beauty.
As soon as he leaves, Des Grieux unexpectedly appears. The lovers fall into each other's arms. They forget everything in their passionate embrace, so Geronte, who returns later, finds them together. Manon laughs at the merchant, and he angrily leaves, secretly plotting revenge against him. Des Grieux desperately begs Manon to flee immediately, but she still wants to collect her jewels. Because of the delay, the soldiers sent by Geronte capture her and lead her away to Geronte's mocking laughter.

In the port of Le Havre, the ship is ready to depart, which is meant to transport women convicted of vagrancy and depravity to the American colonies. Among them is Manon, but Des Grieux and her brother Lescaut try to pay off the guard so that Manon can escape. The plan fails, the women begin to be led onto the ship. Des Grieux then persuades the captain of the ship to travel with Manon to exile.

In American exile, the lovers have to endure further trials: the son of the colony's commander wants to adopt Manon, so Des Grieux kills him. They must escape. Abandoned and exhausted, they wander the wasteland, both dead tired and hungry. Until Manon can't take it anymore, she dies in Des Grieux's arms. His farewell sentence is the last outburst of love: "My sins are swallowed up by time, my sins are forgotten." But my love will never die."

Egy fiatal lány, Manon Lescaut érkezik bátyjával együtt Amiens-be, ahol megismerkedik a szegény, de érzelmes fiatalemberrel, Des Grieux-vel. Elmeséli neki, hogy családja kolostorba szánja, és útján a bátyja kíséretére bízták. Des Grieux-ben első pillantásra szenvedélyes szerelem gyúl Manon iránt…

A postakocsin együtt érkezik azonban Manonnal Geronte is, a gazdag, öreg kereskedő, aki szeretné magának megszerezni Manont. Fogatot rendel, abban a meggyőződésben, hogy a leány nem tud ellenállni a gazdagságának, ám Manon már beleszeretett Des Grieux-be, és vele együtt megszökik a Geronte által rendelt kocsin.

Manon – nem bírván elviselni a szegénységet -, engedett haszonleső bátyja rábeszélésének, aki mellesleg szenvedélyes kártyajátékos is, és Geronte palotájába költözik. Manon azonban hamar rájön, hogy az őt körülvevő fényűzés nem pótolhatja a szerelmet, és vágyódva gondol vissza Des Grieux-re. Egy alkalommal az öreg Geronte belép Manon hálószobájába, hogy gyönyörködjék a lány szépségében.
Alighogy távozik, váratlanul megjelenik Des Grieux. A szerelmesek egymás karjaiba bor ulnak. A szenvedélyes ölelkezésben mindenről megfeledkeznek, így a később visszatérő Geronte együtt találja őket. Manon kineveti a kereskedőt, mire az dühösen távozik, titkon bosszút tervelve ellene. Des Grieux kétségbeesetten könyörög Manon-nak, hogy azonnal meneküljenek, de a lány még össze akarná szedni az ékszereit. A késlekedés miatt a Geronte által küldött katonák elfogják lányt, és Geronte gúnyos kacaja közben elvezetik.

Le Havre kikötőjében kifutásra készen áll a hajó, amely a csavargásért és züllöttségért elítélt nőket az amerikai gyarmatokra hivatott szállítani. Közöttük van Manon is, ám Des Grieux és a lány bátyja, Lescaut megpróbálják lefizetni az őrt, hogy Manont megszöktethessék. A terv meghiúsul, a nőket elkezdik felvezetni a hajóra. Des Grieux ekkor ráveszi a hajó kapitányát, hogy Manonnal utazhasson a száműzetésbe.

Az amerikai száműzetésben a szerelmeseknek további megpróbáltatásokat kell elviselniük: a kolónia parancsnokának fia magáévá szeretné tenni Manont, ezért Des Grieux megöli őt. Muszáj megszökniük. Magukra hagyottan, kimerülve vándorolnak a pusztaságban, mindketten halálosan fáradtak és éhesek. Mígnem Manon nem bírja tovább, meghal Des Grieux karjaiban. Búcsúmondata a szerelem utolsó fellobbanása: ?Vétkemet elnyeli az idő, bűneim feledésbe merülnek. De szerelmem soha nem fog meghalni”.
