For technology gurus like Elon Musk, one thing is certain: the salvation of humanity lies in the colonization of Mars. But is Mars really our “Planet B”? Composer Jennifer Walshe has been fascinated by the red planet since she was a child. In her new multimedia work MARS, she examines a inflammatory cocktail of topics through the lens of her own obsession: technology, Silicon Valley, capitalism, the climate catastrophe and our place in the universe. Welcome to the Walshe Space Centre.

Jennifer Walshe has already hit the mark with the philosophical opera TIME TIME TIME, which she developed for the Sonic Acts festival in the Muziekgebouw. For her, music is a way to explore ideas in a critical and stimulating way. The text for MARS was written by journalist Mark O'Connell, who wrote To Be a Machine, an award-winning book about 'transhumanism', the idea that humanity must 'arm up' with new technologies in order to survive.

The composition MARS was commissioned by Muziekgebouw and supported by Ammodo.

Die Komponistin Jennifer Walshe ist seit ihrer Kindheit vom roten Planeten fasziniert. In ihrem neuen Multimediawerk MARS untersucht sie durch die Linse ihrer eigenen Obsession einen entzündlichen Themencocktail: Technologie, Silicon Valley, Kapitalismus, die Klimakatastrophe und unseren Platz im Universum. Jennifer Walshe hat bereits mit der philosophischen Oper TIME TIME TIME, die sie für das Festival Sonic Acts im Muziekgebouw entwickelte, einen Volltreffer gelandet. Für sie ist Musik eine Möglichkeit, Ideen auf kritische und anregende Weise zu erkunden. Der Text für MARS wurde von dem Journalisten Mark O’Connell verfasst, der mit To Be a Machine ein preisgekröntes Buch über Transhumanismus“ geschrieben hat, also die Idee, dass die Menschheit sich mit neuen Technologien aufrüsten“ muss, um zu überleben.

Die Komposition MARS wurde von Muziekgebouw in Auftrag gegeben und von Ammodo unterstützt.
