Researching the paths to classical music and making it tangible like multi-part narratives is one of the concerns of La Stagione Frankfurt. The ensemble has existed under Michael Schneider's direction since 1988. Many composers, without whose work the greats of Viennese Classicism would be inconceivable, were brought to mind by the musicians from Frankfurt; including Franz Ignaz Beck, who received his first training with Johann Stamitz in Mannheim and from there was sent to Italy for further studies. "Sturm und Drang" was his life and his art, bold symphonies form their core.

With Georg Bendas Medea , La Stagione dedicates itself to a music-theatrical experiment. The one-hour piece is a melodrama. The text is not sung but spoken, partly carried by the orchestra, partly interrupted and supplemented. The rapid change of language and music, the dramatic, highly concentrated composition and the brisk theatrical tempo of action create figure psychograms of exciting intensity. Benda's work received a strong response and found many successors up into the 20th century. The second version of Medea was premiered in Mannheim in 1784.
