Medea, endowed with magical powers, who has come from the edge of the world to the center of civilization, is transformed into an avenging angel. She is driven by the anger and disappointment she experienced from Jason, whom she helped win the most valuable treasure, the Golden Fleece, whom she married and who left her ungratefully. In Corinth, where Jason wants to celebrate his wedding with the daughter of King Creon, a tragic event develops - the miserable Medea brings misery to the others and does not even shy away from infanticide. In the 5th century BC, the Attic poet Euripides put this ancient myth into words in a drama and brought it to the stage. Luigi Cherubini's opera, which premiered in Paris in 1797, draws on this and opens up new horizons for this classical material with the means of a dramatically accentuated, theatrically enormously effective musical language. Rarely has the figure of Medea been given such succinctness and poignancy as here.

Ein uralter Mythos und doch von spürbarer Aktualität: Medea, aus der Peripherie der bekannten Welt stammend und sichtlich eine Fremde im zivilisierten Land, stört Ruhe und Ordnung, wird zum hasserfüllten, Tod und Zerstörung bringenden Racheengel. Seit den antiken Tragödiendichtern ist der Stoff um Medea, Jason und das Goldene Vlies vielfach auf die Theater- und Opernbühne gekommen, so auch um 1800 in Paris.

Der gebürtige Florentiner Luigi Cherubini war in den 1780er Jahren in die französische Metropole gekommen, um dort als Opernkomponist zu reüssieren. Mit seiner »Medée« von 1797 gelang ihm ein respektabler Erfolg, der über das folgende Jahrhundert anhalten sollte. Durch die dramatisch intensivierte gesangliche wie darstellerische Leistung von Maria Callas erfuhr das Werk in den 1950er Jahren neue Aufmerksamkeit. Inspiriert von den tragischen Antikenopern Glucks schuf der Wahlpariser Cherubini, der sich zu den einflussreichsten Persönlichkeiten der Musik seiner Zeit entwickelte, ein Werk von tiefgründigem Ernst und einer monumentalen, eindrucksvollen Tonsprache, mit großen Szenen für die Protagonistin, kompositorisch hervorragend gearbeiteten Chor- und Ensemblesätzen sowie atmosphärisch dichten Instrumentaleinleitungen zu jedem der drei Akte. Die Titelheldin Medea aber ist und bleibt im Zentrum – wenn sie einmal die Bühne betreten hat, zieht sie Alle und Alles unweigerlich in ihren Bann.

An ancient myth and yet noticeably topical: Medea, who comes from the periphery of the known world and is obviously a stranger in a civilized country, disturbs the peace and order, becomes a hateful, avenging angel bringing death and destruction. Ever since the ancient tragic poets, the subject matter of Medea, Jason and the Golden Fleece has often found its way onto the theater and opera stage, including around 1800 in Paris.
