"Mephistofele" is an epic large-scale opera in which the famous Italian writer, poet, librettist and composer Arigo Boyto (1842-1918), based on the ideological basis of the play "Faust" by Goethe, in his own way examines the "Faust problem" for the meaning of life and the omnipotence of Divine providence over human destiny. This opera is the first compositional experience of Arigo Boyto - the favorite librettist and friend of Giuseppe Verdi. He is the author of the libretto for Verdi's latest masterpiece, Falstaff. Arigo Boyto has another large-scale opera - the opera "Nero".

Mephistofele is Arigo Boyto's only completed opera. The composition occupies a special place in the history of Italian opera. The special melodic lines, the complex choirs, the saturation with bright polyphonic moments, the categorically demonstrated "Wagnerianism" of the composer are invaluable merits of the work, which in the past made it difficult for the Italian audience to perceive the opera. That is why the premiere in March 5, 1868 in La Scala was unsuccessful. Boyto offered a new revised version in four acts, which was presented on the stage of the Teatro Comunale-Bologna on October 4, 1875, and a second revised version, presented in Venice, at the Teatro Rossini on May 13, 1876.
But only after the famous performance of Mephistofele by Chaliapin in 1901 at La Scala, which was a huge success, because then Faust was performed by Caruso and conducted by Arturo Toscanini, the opera gained popularity, which remains to this day.

The first performance in Bulgaria of the opera "Mephistofele" was on October 1, 1982 on the stage of the Sofia Opera. The director of this production is the actor from the troupe of the Ruse Drama Theater Konstantin Dimchev - an artist who with his productions on the stage of the Ruse Opera has had an extremely beneficial effect on its development. The Conductor was Ivan Marinov. The role of Mephistofele is played by Bulgarian bass Nikola Gyuzelev.

Jean-François D'Ont is a Belgian producer, director and playwright. He is responsible for the classical program in the production company Music Hall, which creates and organizes ballet, opera and music production in its own theaters, as well as touring in Europe.
He has worked at the Flemish Opera, at the Center for Fine Arts in Brussels (Bozar Center), and also for several international theater troupes. He has assisted Harry Kupfer and Joachim Hertz (Comische Opera, Berlin), Anthony Besch (English National Opera), Maurice Bejart (Bejart Ballet, Lausanne), Michelangelo Antonioni, John Malkovich.
Jean-François D'Ont produces concerts with singers Cecilia Bartoli, Jonas Kaufman, Roberto Alanya, Juan Diego Flores, Brin Terfel, Elina Garancha, Andreas Scholl and others. He has worked with conductors such as Zubin Meta, Sir Simon Rattle, Maris Jansons, Valeri Gergiev and soloists such as Daniel Barenboim, Marta Argerich, Keith Jarrett, Art Garfunkel, Goran Bregovic, Yo Yo Ma. He is a producer on the world tour of the concert program of the project "In War and Peace. Through Harmony and Music. ” By world American opera singer Joyce Didonato.
He has worked as an artistic director, producer and consultant for Europalia, Balkan Traffic Festival, Klara Festival, International Film Festival, European Opera Center and others.
In addition to the more than 60 theatrical productions he has in his directorial portfolio, he has directed opera productions for the stage and television for a number of opera titles, including Tosca, Don Juan, Carmen, and Cinderella by Jules Massenet. Hoffmann's Stories. Participated in the Belgian premiere of "Death in Venice" by Benjamin Britton.
In December 2018, Jean-François D'Ont directed in collaboration with the State Opera-Varna the productions of "Nabucco" and "La Boheme" in Brussels.
Arigo Boyto's large-scale production of Mephistofele is the Belgian director's debut on the stage of the Ruse Opera.

„Мефистофел” е опера в пролог, четири действия и епилог от Ариго Бойто по собствено либрето, базирано на „Фауст” I и II на Йохан Волфганг фон Гьоте.
