Meet composer Mikael Karlsson in the making of Melancholia, an opera based on the Lars von Trier movie. The first workshop with the Royal Swedish Orchestra has taken place in Stockholm, now the final score is being prepared for the world premiere at the Royal Swedish Opera October 7, 2023.

På sin bröllopsfest får den vackra men deprimerade Justine syn på en röd stjärna på himlen. Det är planeten Melancholia som är på kollisionskurs med jorden. Nyblivne maken Michael försöker lugna henne med sin kärlek, hennes mamma Gaby försöker förgifta henne med sitt mörker, hennes syster Claire försöker rädda henne med sin omsorg. Men ingen kan hindra de mystiska krafter som väcks inom Justine. Och Melancholia kommer allt närmare… 

Den ikoniske regissören Lars von Triers apokalyptiska Melancholia tog världen med storm 2011. Nu har tonsättaren Mikael Karlsson – för Kungliga Operans publik känd för sin musik till Alexander Ekman-baletter som Midsommarnattsdröm och Eskapist – skapat en helaftonsopera av den fascinerande filmen. För librettot står Royce Vavrek, som tidigare gjort librettot till operaversionen av von Triers Breaking the waves. Bland solisterna återfinns sopranen Lauren Snouffer – virtuos på både barockopera och samtida musik – som Justine, Metropolitanoperans unga stjärnskott Rihab Chaieb som Claire och Anne Sofie von Otter som den iskalla modern Gaby.

Lars von Triers film adapted for the stage – world premiere of MELANCHOLIA  at the Royal Swedish Opera

At her wedding reception, the beautiful but depressed Justine spots a red star in the sky. It is the planet Melancholia, which is on a collision course with Earth. The bridegroom Michael tries to calm her down with his love, her mother Gaby poisons her with her darkness, and her sister Claire attempts to rescue her with her solicitude. But no-one can stop the mysterious forces ignited within Justine. And Melancholia gets closer and closer… 

The iconic director Lars von Trier’s apocalyptic Melancholia took the world by storm in 2011. The composer Mikael Karlsson – known to the Royal Swedish Opera’s audiences for his music to Alexander Ekman ballets such as Midsummer Night’s Dream and Escapist – has now made a full-length opera based on the fascinating film. The librettist is Royce Vavrek, who also wrote the libretto for the operatic version of von Trier’s Breaking the Waves. The soloists include the soprano Lauren Snouffer – a virtuoso performer of both baroque opera and contemporary music – as Justine, Metropolitan Opera’s young rising star Rihab Chaieb as Claire, and Anne Sofie von Otter as the ice-cold mother Gaby.
