GROSSE CONCERTE - Mendelssohn-Festtage: Infelice, Op. 94

The words are the most beautiful nonsense of Metastasio, recitative, adagio and allegro brought together from four different operas. Nevertheless, the writer of these lines, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, set them to music twice. In the first version , all this should make up for a solo violin, for which I speculate on Beriot. Fanny immediately saw through that an aria with the participation of the violinist Charles-Auguste de Bériot must have been intended for his not-so-secret fiancé, the star soprano María Malibran. At the world premiere on May 19, 1834 in London, the glamorous couple shone with absence and infelice! – Ah, ritorna was sung very miserably by Maria Caradori-Allan instead. Nine years later – Mendelssohn had long since moved from Düsseldorf to Leipzig – he composed a scene for the Gewandhaus singer Sophie Schloss to the same words. This second version, premiered in Leipzig in 1843, is almost completely new apart from borrowings in terms of motifs and dispenses with the solo violin.

THE ITALIAN
With the first version of the aria, Mendelssohn fulfilled a commission from the Philharmonic Society, which at the same time commissioned a symphony and persuaded him to complete the Italian one . When the work was premiered in London after just one rehearsal under Mendelssohn's direction, the inspiring trip to Italy was already three years old. At that time he had reported in the first creative frenzy: The "Italian Symphony" is making great progress; it's going to be the funnest piece I've done, especially the last one.

Con brio – the framing movements of Mendelssohn's Italian could be headed with this playing instruction, which Beethoven loved . Gleichwohl vertonte sie der Schreiber dieser Zeilen, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, gleich zwei Mal. In der ersten Version soll das alles eine solo Geige wieder gut machen, bei der ich auf Beriot speculire. Fanny durchschaute sogleich, dass eine Arie mit Beteiligung des Geigers Charles-Auguste de Bériot für dessen nicht allzu heimliche Verlobte, die Starsopranistin María Malibran, bestimmt sein müsse. Bei der Uraufführung am 19. Mai 1834 in London glänzte das glamouröse Paar durch Abwesenheit und Infelice! – Ah, ritorna wurde stattdessen von Maria Caradori-Allan ganz miserabel gesungen. Neun Jahre später – Mendelssohn war längst von Düsseldorf nach Leipzig gewechselt – komponierte er auf dieselben Worte eine Szene für die Gewandhaus-Sängerin Sophie Schloss. Diese 1843 in Leipzig uraufgeführte 2. Fassung ist von motivischen Anleihen abgesehen fast vollkommen neu und verzichtet auf die Solovioline.

DIE ITALIENISCHE
Mit der ersten Fassung der Arie erfüllte Mendelssohn einen Auftrag der Philharmonic Society, die im gleichen Zug eine Sinfonie bestellte und ihnzur Vollendung der Italienischen bewog. Als das Werk unter Mendelssohns Leitung nach nur einer Probe in London uraufgeführt wurde, lag die inspirierende Italienreise bereits drei Jahre zurück. Damals hatte er im ersten Schaffensfuror gemeldet: Die »italienische Symphonie« macht große Fortschritte; es wird das lustigste Stück, das ich gemacht habe, namentlich das letzte.

DAS ITALIENISCHE
Con brio – mit dieser Spielanweisung, die Beethoven liebte, könnten die Rahmensätze von Mendelssohns Italienischer überschrieben sein. Schwungvoll, spritzig, lebhaft: All dies meint die italienische Angabe, die der Beethoven- und Mendelssohn-Verehrer Jörg Widmann zum Titel und Motto eines gewitzt-andeutungsreichen Orchesterstücks macht. Widmann beschränkt sich auf die klassisch-frühromantische Orchesterbesetzung, jedoch keinesfalls auf herkömmliche Klangerzeugung...
