Over dit programma van Tomáš Hanus en het jonge Zweedse vioolwonder Johan Dalene hangt de slagschaduw van het Derde Rijk: muziek uit Theresienstadt van Ullmann en het in de oorlog verboden Vioolconcert van Mendelssohn.

Een symfonie uit het kamp
De joodse componist Viktor Ullmann beklaagde zich tijdens zijn gevangenschap in het concentratiekamp Theresienstadt niet over de mensonterende leefomstandigheden, maar over het ontbreken van muziekpapier – hij gebruikte de achterzijde van weggegooide deportatielijsten om zijn muzikale invallen vast te houden. Zijn symfonieën noteerde hij in de vorm van pianosonates, met hier en daar een aantekening over de instrumentatie; ze praktisch uitwerken was voor hemzelf uiteraard volkomen zinloos. Op voorbeeldige wijze heeft de Duitse componist Bernhard Wulff de schetsen van Ullmann ontcijferd en uitgewerkt tot volledig overtuigende partituren.

Mendelssohn en Strauss
Dankzij het immense succes van zijn opera Der Rosenkavalier en het symfonische gedicht Also sprach Zarathustra werd Richard Strauss beschouwd als de grootste levende Duitse toondichter. Hij leek onaantastbaar – en gedroeg zich ook zo – maar stond intussen doodsangsten uit om zijn joodse kleinkinderen. Het Vioolconcert van Felix Mendelssohn werd in Amsterdam na vijf jaar van gedwongen zwijgen pas weer gespeeld door het Concertgebouworkest, op 1 september 1945. Solist was toen de joodse concertmeester Jo Hekster.

A symphony from the camp
The Jewish composer Viktor Ullmann, while imprisoned in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, complained not about the degrading living conditions, but about the lack of music paper - he used the back of discarded deportation lists to hold on to his musical incursions. He notated his symphonies in the form of piano sonatas, with a note here and there about the instrumentation; working them out practically was, of course, completely pointless for himself. In exemplary fashion, the German composer Bernhard Wulff deciphered Ullmann's sketches and worked them into completely convincing scores.

Mendelssohn and Strauss
Thanks to the immense success of his opera Der Rosenkavalier and the symphonic poem Also sprach Zarathustra, Richard Strauss was considered the greatest living German tone poet. He seemed untouchable - and behaved that way - but in the meantime stood in agony for his Jewish grandchildren. Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto was not played again in Amsterdam by the Concertgebouw Orchestra until Sept. 1, 1945, after five years of enforced silence. Soloist then was the Jewish concertmaster Jo Hekster.
