Es ist eines der zentralen Konzerte im Festival „Vom Lied zum Song“, das der langjährige Chefdirigent Ernst Theis als erstes von zwei Programmen mit der Deutschen Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz präsentiert – und ein Höhepunkt ist es allemal, gesellt sich doch zu dem hervorragenden Orchester eine stattliche Zahl von Sängerinnen und Sän-
gern, einige von Ihnen mit beachtlichen internationalen Karrieren, andere am Beginn und auf dem Sprung, es den prominenten Kollegen nachzutun.
So schlagen die „Mondlieder“ den Bogen von großen sinfonischen Orchesterliedern der Spätromantik zu der neuen Tonsprache von Kurt Weill, wie sie mit dem „Mahagonny Songspiel“ am 17. Juli 1927 – und damit gerade einmal ein halbes Jahr nach der Premiere von „Royal Palace“, das einen ganz anderen Weill zeigt und beim Festspiel-Schlusskonzert zur Aufführung kommt – beim Festival Deutsche Kammermusik in Baden-Baden vorgestellt wurde. Basierend auf Texten von Bertolt Brecht, die bereits 1920/1921 in seinem Gedichtband „Hauspostille“ erschienen sind, finden sich erste Spuren zu einem Opernprojekt im Tagebuch von Brecht im Juli 1924. Dass Mahagonny nur der Begriff einer Stadt sei, nur aus klanglichen Gründen gewählt worden ist, legt insbesondere auch der Schluss des Songspiels nahe: „Mahagonny – das gibt es nicht. Mahagonny – das ist kein Ort. Mahagonny – das ist nur ein erfundenes Wort.“ Gar nicht erfunden und nicht virtuell wird sicherlich das Festspielglück sein, wie Ernst Theis und die Regisseurin Doris Sophie Heinrichsen ein halbszenisches Konzert-Programm realisieren, das man üblicherweise kaum ohne Opernhaus auf die Bühne bringen kann!
