В основе либретто комические перипетии, связанные с массовым переселением из старых коммуналок в новые жилые кварталы – тогда «квартирный вопрос» был особенно актуален, причем не только для москвичей.
Над постановкой «Черёмушек» работаел режиссер Иван Поповски – ученик Петра Фоменко.

For the first time at the Bolshoi Theatre – on the Chamber Stage – is the premiere of Dmitri Shostakovich’s only operetta Moscow, Cheryomushki.

At the heart of Vladimir Mass and Mikhail Chervinskyi’s libretto lie the comic ups and downs associated with the mass resettlement of Muscovites from old communal apartments to new residential quarters.

The well-known theatre director Ivan Popovski, a student of Pyotr Fomenko, is working on the production at the Bolshoi. The musical director of the production is Pavel Klinichev, conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre and multiple times the laureate of The Golden Mask National Theatre Award.

Moscow, Cheryomushki: Cheryomushki, Op.105

The premiere of Dmitri Shostakovich's only operetta "Moscow, Cheryomushki" took place at the Moscow Operetta Theater on January 24, 1959. Performances soon followed in Rostov-on-Don, Odessa, Sverdlovsk, Bratislava, Prague, Magadan, Zagreb, various cities of the GDR and Czechoslovakia. And two years later, on the basis of the operetta, the film "Cheryomushki" (directed by Herbert Rappaport) was shot. 

The composer's return to musical theater after the "anti-formalist campaign" of the 1930s and, moreover, his debut in the "light" genre were eagerly expected. One of the founders and leading artist of the Moscow Operetta Theater Grigory Yaron wrote in his book of memoirs: “The news that Shostakovich was writing an operetta was met with great interest. How? The composer who wrote the Seventh Symphony, and recently the Eleventh, and suddenly composes an operetta?! Wherever I appeared, the first question I heard from people I knew and didn't know, of various ages and professions: "What is Shostakovich's operetta?" The composer himself, regarding his “sensational” appeal to the operetta genre, said: “I believe that a real composer should try his hand at all genres.”

The composer (a witty and sarcastic person by nature) was sympathetic to light genre music, including classical operetta - Offenbach, Johann Strauss, Lehar, Kalman. He began to write his own opus in this genre in September 1957 "at the persistent, urgent requests" of the chief conductor of the Moscow Operetta Theater Grigory Stolyarov and completed work on it in October 1958.

Bright, cheerful music captured the sound atmosphere of the 1950s - in this the composer was alien to any kind of rigorism. The operetta was filled with the usual rhythms of waltzes, gallops, polkas, and the unexpected appearance of familiar melodies - Shostakovich's "Songs about the Counter", popular folk songs "Roast Chicken", "Whether in the garden, in the garden", "Moscow Evenings" by Solovyov-Sedoy and others - creates a special comic effect.

The plot was chosen to be extremely topical. The libretto by Vladimir Mass and Mikhail Chervinsky is based on the comic twists and turns associated with the mass migration from old communal apartments to new residential areas. Then the “housing issue” was especially relevant, and not only for Muscovites. It has not lost its relevance even now, during the renovation - the resettlement of the Khrushchevs, in which the heroes of Shostakovich happily settled.

Today, more than sixty years after the premiere, the operetta “Moscow, Cheryomushki” sounds in a new way: with a bright “note” of sadness for the idyllic life of Moscow settlers of the 1950s, for the time of youth and hopes of the post-war generation. The production director, Ivan Popovsky, sought to preserve the "playful and bright nature", the special atmosphere of those times, "when, it would seem, it became a little easier to breathe, although internal contradictions in people still remained." A bright performance reminiscent of Soviet comedy films, created by his production team - conductor Pavel Klinichev, set designers Sergei Tchoban and Alexandra Sheiner and others - fully corresponds to this feeling.

Премьера единственной оперетты Дмитрия Шостаковича «Москва, Черёмушки» состоялась в Московском театре оперетты 24 января 1959 года. Вскоре последовали спектакли в Ростове-на-Дону, Одессе, Свердловске, Братиславе, Праге, Магадане, Загребе, разных городах ГДР и Чехословакии. А через два года на основе оперетты был снят фильм «Черёмушки» (режиссер Герберт Раппапорт). 

Возвращение композитора в музыкальный театр после «антиформалистической кампании» 1930-х годов и, к тому же, его дебют в «лёгком» жанре ожидались с большим нетерпением. Один из основателей и ведущий артист Московского театра оперетты Григорий Ярон писал в своей книге воспоминаний: «Сообщение о том, что Шостакович пишет оперетту, было встречено с огромным интересом. Как? Композитор, написавший Седьмую симфонию, а недавно — Одиннадцатую, и вдруг сочиняет оперетту?!! Где бы я ни появлялся, первый вопрос, который я слышал от людей знакомых и незнакомых, различных возрастов и профессий: “Какова оперетта Шостаковича?”. Сам композитор по поводу своего “сенсационного” обращения к жанру оперетты говорил: “Я считаю, что настоящий композитор должен попробовать свои силы во всех жанрах”».

Композитор (человек по натуре остроумный и саркастичный) с симпатией относился к музыке лёгких жанров, в том числе классической оперетте — Оффенбаху, Иоганну Штраусу, Легару, Кальману. За написание собственного опуса в этом жанре он принялся в сентябре 1957 года «по неотступным, настоятельным просьбам» главного дирижёра Московского театра оперетты Григория Столярова и завершил работу над ней в октябре 1958 года.

Яркая, весёлая музыка запечатлела звуковую атмосферу 1950-х годов — в этом композитор был чужд какого бы то ни было ригоризма. Оперетта была наполнена привычными ритмами вальсов, галопов, полек, а неожиданное появление знакомых мелодий — «Песни о встречном» самого Шостаковича, популярных народных песен «Цыплёнок жареный», «Во саду ли, в огороде», «Подмосковные вечера» Соловьёва-Седого и других — создаёт особый комический эффект.

Сюжет был выбран на редкость злободневный. В основе либретто Владимира Масса и Михаила Червинского — комические перипетии, связанные с массовым переселением из старых коммуналок в новые жилые кварталы. Тогда «квартирный вопрос» был особенно актуален, причём не только для москвичей. Своей актуальности он не утратил и сейчас, во времена реновации — расселения хрущёвок, в которые радостно заселялись герои Шостаковича.

Сегодня, спустя более шестидесяти лет после премьеры, оперетта «Москва, Черёмушки» звучит по-новому: со светлой «ноткой» грусти по идиллической жизни московских новосёлов 1950-х, по времени молодости и надежд послевоенного поколения. Режиссёр-постановщик, Иван Поповски, стремился сохранить «игровую и светлую природу», особую атмосферу тех времён, «когда, казалось бы, стало чуть легче дышать, хотя внутренние противоречия в людях всё равно оставались». Яркий, напоминающий советские кинокомедии спектакль, созданный его постановочной командой — дирижёром Павлом Клиничевым, сценографами Сергеем Чобаном и Александрой Шейнер и другими, — полностью соответствует этому ощущению.
