Although France was moving rapidly towards secularisation, the production of motets during the Second Empire and the Third Republic, reflecting the phenomenal progression at that time of the cult of the Virgin Mary, never waned. Many French composers – organists of the main Parisian churches, choirmasters or simply fervent Catholics – took an interest in the genre and gave it new codes. Under pressure from ecclesiastical reformers, they paid particular attention to respecting the sacred text and moved towards a certain stylistic sobriety. Palestrina’s compositions and Gregorian chant became the absolute models for those wishing to return to the origins of Christian piety. Promoting an aesthetic between archaism and modernity, motets soon joined the concert repertoires.

Sebbene la Francia stia muovendo a grandi passi verso la laicizzazione, durante il Secondo Impero e la Terza Repubblica la produzione di mottetti non diminuisce; in particolare, essa accompagna gli enormi progressi del culto della Vergine Maria. Alla tastiera degli organi delle maggiori chiese parigine molti compositori francesi ‒ maestri di cappella o semplicemente ferventi cattolici ‒ si dedicano a questo genere e ne rinnovano i codici. Sotto la pressione dei riformatori ecclesiastici, prestano una cura particolare alla lettera del testo sacro e adottano una certa sobrietà stilistica. Le composizioni di Palestrina e il canto gregoriano s’impongono allora come modelli assoluti per coloro che desiderano ritornare alle origini della pietà cristiana e i mottetti integrano i repertori dei concerti, per promuovere un’estetica che oscilla tra arcaismo e modernità.

Bien que la France marche à grand pas vers une laïcisation, la production de motets pendant le Second Empire et sous la Troisième République ne faiblit pas. Elle accompagne notamment les progrès phénoménaux du culte voué à la Vierge Marie. Placés à la tribune des orgues des grandes églises parisiennes, maîtres de chapelle ou simplement fervents catholiques, de nombreux compositeurs français s’intéressent à ce genre et en renouvellent les codes. Sous la pression des réformateurs ecclésiastiques, ils accordent un soin particulier au respect du texte sacré et se dirigent vers une certaine sobriété stylistique. Les compositions de Palestrina et le chant grégorien s’imposent alors comme des modèles absolus à ceux qui souhaitent retourner aux origines de la piété chrétienne. Et les motets intègrent les répertoires des concerts pour promouvoir une esthétique entre archaïsme et modernité.
