My Fair Lady , based on George Bernard Shaw's comedy Pygmalion, is one of the most popular musicals today. But at first composers like Leonard Bernstein or Cole Porter failed in the task of adapting the ironic social comedy for music theater. It was not until 1956 that the Viennese Frederick Loewe, together with the librettist Alan Jay Lerner, achieved the impossible. With 2,717 performances, My Fair Lady ran longer than any previous musical play on Broadway, and its melodies went around the world and became evergreens - not least thanks to the filming with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.
